Ernest 90.13: A Work In Progress

As a regular reader, you know that we have been honoring the 90th anniversary of Guide for Spiritual Living: Science of Mind magazine over the past year. Like the 89 before it, this past year has been one of growth for this magazine. As with all living entities, we have had our challenges and our successes, our hits and our misses.

To provide a bit more context, here’s a recap of our anniversary year, starting with last October’s issue and including this one (13 issues):

1. In addition to Ernest Holmes, our covers featured five women, six men and the Ruiz family. Five featured people of color.
2. Two covers featured ministers who are graduates of Holmes Institute and who now serve in two of the largest Unity congregations.
3. Our cover stories featured a Catholic nun, an international peacekeeper, a poet, a humanitarian, a scientific genius, the founder of a nonprofit and a wisdom keeper of Toltec traditions, among others.
4. Our Spiritual Hero is a person of African descent.
5. Our monthly prayers were written by lay members, Religious Science practitioners and ministers.
6. We offered three special sections on sacred travel, pets and, with this issue, health and wellness. …

Discovery of the Self

There never was a you before just the you that you are, and there never will be another one. Nature never duplicates her creations, even though she multiplies them. There is a doorway or an entrance through which the mind must pass on its way to spiritual realization, and that door can be opened by none but the one who is to enter. Within each of us is the Secret Place of the Most High, the Holy of Holies, the Ark of the Covenant, the Scroll of Life, the Sacred Name of God.

There is a certain amount that can be taught; the rest must be learned through the doing. Every man must discover God in his own way, but always within himself.

Now, there are many approaches to the door and no doubt many entrances to the Holy of Holies. Every great spiritual leader has found a door through which he has entered. As we study the spiritual systems of the ages we discover that, though the approach has been varied, the Temple of the Spirit is One. God is all there is, and there is none beside Him. This statement includes everything. …

The end, the aim and the whole purpose of our study is not for the salvation of the individual life, because Life cannot be lost, but for the discovery of the Self, which the Scripture tells us is hidden with Christ in God.

So many people who found Centers for Spiritual Living over the years profess that these teachings were always in their hearts, but they never knew such communities existed.
