Seasonal Affirmation—Spring
Ernest Holmes

Dr. Ernest Holmes

I know there is a Presence that came with me when I entered this life, and I know this same Presence will go with me when I leave this physical form, for It is the Presence of eternal Life, the Life that cannot die. And because God cannot fail, and because the Divine Presence within me is God as my real self, I know there is a Power flowing through my word of faith which makes straight the way before me.

I have no fear of the past, the present, or the future. Each and every day, I am living in the knowledge that God is over all and through all. I feel this Presence as perfection, love, and goodness making my life whole and complete.

Excerpted from A Holmes Reader for All Seasons by Ernest Holmes, compiled and edited by Rev. Carol Sheffield and Kenneth Lind, Science of Mind Publishing.

Let’s Celebrate Father’s Day Sunday, June 16!

A Father with his kid.Although Mother’s Day was officially adopted by Presidential Proclamation in 1914, it was not until 1966 that President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first Presidential Proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Father’s Day was not officially a permanent national holiday in the United States until President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

In May, readers enjoyed an excerpt “On Mothers,” by Margaret Stortz. In this newsletter, we offer our readers her essay “On Fathers.” Both essays are from Dr. Stortz’s newly published book Essays on Everything—From the Sublime to the Ridiculous with a Little in Between.

On Fathers
Margaret Stortz

Margaret StortzHere’s to fathers, to those who waited anxiously while we were being born, to those who indulged in some distant fling and didn’t even know they were fathers. Here’s to them all anyway. Whether or not they were good and thoughtful parents, they made it possible for us to come into life, and for that alone they deserve some credit. I’ve known a few dads, my own specifically, and the one who made it possible for me to become a mother. On the whole, I’d say they were a pretty good lot.

The Father’s Hand
Odell T. Fellows

Science of Mind Magazine Cover for June, 1928.

My little boy oft rides with me
    And plays that he is driving, too;
His chubby hands with mine I feel
Upon the auto steering-wheel,
    And ever we go safely through.
If dangers threaten, sudden, grim,
    And fears our very hearts congeal,
My boy smiles up into my face
And says with childhood’s artless grace:
   “My daddy’s hand is on the wheel!”
Oh, precious faith of tender years!
    Would it were ours when cares beset!
When, on the sea or on the land,
To learn to trust the guiding hand;
     And trust and trust—and ne’er forget!
Our heavenly Father bideth near;
    His constant presence we may feel.
Or on the land or on the sea,
No harm can come to you and me—
    The Father’s hand is on the wheel!
