The Whole Human Family
Ernest Holmes

Dr. Ernest Holmes

There is more good in the world than we realize, and it is this good in each other that we wish to bring out. Sometimes, we feel that if we could change the world in a minute, through some miracle of love, all would be well. And this is true. But the world is made up of the people who live in it, and that means you and me….You will have to begin where you are, and I will have to begin where I am, right now, today.

Haven’t you often met someone, just in passing, and said to yourself, “If I knew this man better, I am sure that I would admire him”? Perhaps we are just a little too timid. Perhaps there isn’t quite enough give and take in life. We are all so much alike inside. We all do want people to like us, and we want to feel that we enter into their lives in some vital way. We all have the same needs, the same hopes and longings.

It doesn’t matter that we have different opinions, for we are all individuals, each is a person in his own right, and unity does not mean uniformity. But unity does mean that we get along as a human family. There are several hundred different churches in the United States, but they all believe in one God. We have two great political parties, but each believes in the United States. We have forty-eight states in one Union. It is not the different opinions that we need be concerned with, but how to get along with each other in one world.

The problem begins right at home, in your mind and in mine. Have we kindness for others? Are we flexible enough to know that everyone doesn’t have to think alike in order to get along? Are we able to put ourselves in the other fellow’s place? Can we overlook the irritations of life and reach across all difference of opinion to the common ground upon which we all stand and the united purpose toward which we all strive?

Kids Making a Difference—Talia Lehman Leads the Way

Talia Lehman Leads the WayTalia Lehman is one young woman who has stepped up to the challenge of acting from kindness and bringing out the goodness in others. When she was ten years old, moved by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, she motivated children to trick-or-treat for money at Halloween in order to raise funds to provide disaster relief. At seventeen, she created the nonprofit organization RandomKid, which has united young people to make a difference by working together to select projects that inspire them and take action to support those projects. RandomKid has now raised more than 10 million dollars and supports a variety of philanthropic efforts. Read more about Talia in “The Power of Anyone,” Science of Mind, April 2013.

Earth Day 2013—April 22

What Calls to You for Earth Day?

Youn Woman taking care of some plants.Earth Day, Monday April 22, 2013, calls all citizens of planet Earth to examine the challenges of global climate change. The Earth Day Network (EDN) explains, “Climate change can seem like a remote problem for our leaders, but the fact is that it’s already impacting real people, animals, and beloved places. These Faces of Climate Change are multiplying every day. Fortunately, other Faces of Climate Change are multiplying, too: those stepping up to do something about it. Together, we’ll personalize the massive challenge climate change presents by telling the world these stories through images shown at thousands of Earth Day events around the world.” EDN’s goal is to achieve 2 billion Acts of Green. More than two years ago, A Billion Acts of Green® began to steadily build commitments by individuals, organizations, businesses, and governments to protect the planet, inspiring and rewarding both simple individual acts and larger organizational initiatives that reduce carbon emissions and support sustainability. Having achieved the goal of a billion acts, the initiative is moving on to the goal of 2 billion Acts of Green. They ask us to think of this as “A Billion Acts of Green 2.0.” Which acts of green call to you?

Season for the Earth Logo

Deep Green—Back to Our Roots

The Association for Global New Thought invites you to participate in the Seventh Annual Season for the Earth, April – June 2013. The Season for the Earth is dedicated to compassionate activism and global healing. This year, the season’s theme is Deep Green—Back to Our Roots. This program is based on the premise “The tradition of spiritually motivated activism, seeded deeply into the Seasons for Peace and Nonviolence, begins with an irrevocable relationship with the Source within you that is learning, discerning, choosing, and then acting. Just as peace cannot magically appear until you have ‘made some’ with that within you that transcends violence with compassion, solutions for the Earth Family must originate from a profound understanding of our interdependence and oneness with all creation.”

In order to go back to our roots, Deep Green urges us to “contemplate, meditate, be drawn into deep conversations about the Earth, and spend time in nature.” The program offers a service template and strategies to ground one in the roots of New Thought and the awareness of the sacredness of our relationship with nature.
