Celebrating 85 Years!

This October, Science of Mind magazine celebrates its eighty-fifth year of continuous publication. In February of 1927, the Institute of Religious Science and School of Science of Mind Magazine First CoverPhilosophy was founded. Its headquarters was established at 2511 Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. In October of that year, a monthly magazine titled Religious Science was launched. In 1929, the name was changed to Science of Mind to align with the title of the textbook.

In 1930, a second magazine was launched under the editorship of Dr. Willett Harding of the University of Southern California. It was designed to supplement Science of Mind and was filled with contributions from distinguished scholars. The following article by Ernest Holmes has been excerpted from the first issue of that publication: Quarterly Journal of Science, Religion, and Philosophy, Spring, 1930.

Great Religions Differ Little in Principle
Ernest Holmes

Dr. Ernest HolmesThe Institute of Religious Science and School of Philosophy...in a broad sense is a school of life, seeking through the various avenues of knowledge to unify science, religion, and philosophy; not at the expense of any one of these branches of human knowledge and experience, but through uniting all efforts in an attempt to understand the full significance of human life, and to approach the one Reality behind all things....The function of the Institute is to teach and not preach, to explain and not condemn, to broaden and not limit, to serve all who may come under its influence.

Religious Science reads everyman’s Bible and gleans the truths therein contained. It studies all peoples’ thought and draws from each that which is self-evident. Only that which is self-evident can stand the test of reason and time. Without criticism, without judgment, but by true discrimination, that which is true and provable may be discovered and put to practical use.

If we were to examine the basic principle of the great religions of the world, we would not find as much difference as might be expected. Each points to one central life from whose self-existence all draw their livingness and without which nothing could exist.

All truth is our truth. No man robs us of our own soul, and our spirit is already one with the eternal Goodness. Everyman’s belief is good so far as it is in line with Reality. We have no controversies with anyone. As we claim freedom, so we extend its privileges to everyone else; we will give and accept on no other terms. We are scientific searchers for that Truth which makes man free, and we know that we have found entrance to It.

The past is behind and whatever doubt it may have held is gone with it. The future is before, bright with prospects; the eternal sun of righteousness is ever ascending, never to descend. Let us look toward the high goal of lasting attainment, fearless and happy. Let us live in the present, looking neither backward in horror, nor forward with apprehension—but looking into the present with joy—“Abiding in Faith.”

Our Past Illuminates Our Future
Jeannette Quinn Bisbee

In the October issue of Science of Mind, Jeannette Bisbee’s feature “The Beginnings of Science of Mind Magazine” led readers on a tour of the first issue of the magazine. Be a Part of the Tipping Point
50,000 Blessings by December 21, 2012

Rev. Cynthia JamesGandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” That statement has been moving through Rev. Cynthia James’s mind for several weeks as she reads the comments on social media and learns that so many people are feeling helpless and disillusioned. She is clear that we are living in a time of extreme opposites. There are people doing extraordinary work to bring peace and higher consciousness to the planet, and there are some who are committed to war and violence. Rev. Cynthia believes that we are either part of the problem or we are part of the solution. She also believes that our words have power and that what we put out to the universe returns in some kind of form.

On September 22, 2012, Rev. Cynthia launched the Global Blessing Blog. Her intention is to invite 50,000 people from all over the world to become a voice for good, love, peace, and harmony. You are cordially invited to join and bring your voice to create a shift on this planet. Anyone can post as long as they agree to post only blessings, so invite your friends and family. All faiths, cultures, and lifestyles are invited and encouraged to participate. There are agreements to consent to and anything unlike a blessing will be removed.

Rev. Cynthia welcomes you: Together, we can make a difference as we speak as one. There is a lot of talk about the end of the Mayan Calendar on December 21, 2012. We will be posting through that day. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if together we created an “energy vortex” that was so powerful that December 22nd became a time of emergence and new birth?
