humanity's evolution ERNEST HOLMES It
may surprise some to know that although he was an ordained minister and
the founder of a movement that today is supported by hundreds of churches,
Ernest Holmes never had a church of his own. He preferred to hold his
speaking engagements in non-religious settings like lecture rooms and
theatres. |

Forget everything. Forget every sense of struggle or strife and realize peace, perfect peace, and satisfaction. There is one perfect life, one limitless love, one eternal God, and that one Mind, being the only Mind there is, is the Mind that we use. No other thought can influence us. We are all immersed in a psychic life. Within this infinite psychic life, or subjective consciousness, there is the possibility and the thought not only of everything that we have ever done but everything that God ever thought. In other words, cosmic purpose. A cosmic purpose is the power behind the unfoldment of ourselves in everything. It means that all purposes of God and us exist right at the center of our own consciousness. Not only do they exist in this totality as a purpose but in their completion as an accomplishment. The moment you give to deductive consciousness the realization of the end, that is the completion of the unfoldment. The great truths that have been taught were discerned by individuals who had meditated until they penetrated the cosmic purpose. God did not reward them because of their meditation. There is no such thing as Providence. There could not be such a thing as Providence from the standpoint it is spoken of. Everything must be law and there is a Providence only that is self-assertive and not a special act of God but a specialized act of an individual. What has happened in the process of evolution? This great conclusion of the ages-the most far-reaching, the most sweeping, the most fascinating and intriguing conclusion the human mind has ever come to-is what Browning called man: "A God though in the germ." He writes:
Praise
be thine! Therefore,
I summon age The whole process of evolution was necessary for the emergence of Cosmic individualization, that every man might be on the pathway of his own life; that every man, whether he knows it or not, might set the law of his life; for there is no law other than the law that he sets-as it comes into conjunction with the one universal Law of Cause and Effect. He cannot change the Law, but the very power which limits and binds him, rightly used, can free him. There is nothing between us and God but our own thoughts and beliefs. Hush,
hush; 'tis thine own self that hinders thee. Suppose there is something you want to know. When you say, "I want to know it," it is announced in Mind and the answer is there. Is that true of anything? In principle, it is true; in practice, it is as true as we make it. People must realize that no matter how infinite the Infinite may be; it can only become to them what it can become through them. We must look at ourselves with our own eyes. If we could open up, clean house mentally, and get out of ourselves what ails us, everything would be allowed because the Infinite cannot refuse anything. It is true that everything exists in the Infinite as a potential possibility. It is not true that everything exists in the Infinite as a manifest fact. That is clear when you recognize we ourselves are the unfoldment of that Infinite into higher specialized manifestations. If we could get out of our consciousness these things that hinder this omniscience from flowing through into objective recognition, we would live a life without effort. The day that personal activity began, compulsory and arbitrary evolution ceased. Jesus comprehended cosmic purposes. He had cleansed himself, not of what people might call the sins of the world, but of the mistakes of consciousness, and he thereby allowed a complete flow. The spirit of Christ is typified through the individual who understands that the cosmic purpose is greater than his/her own.
